In Wake The Dead, pianist Joanna Duda (PL) and hornist Morris Kliphuis (NL) create a delicate musical world together, full of hypnotic, soft textures, wavy ostinatos, and interwoven with the unique, warm sound of Baroque instruments.

Joanna and Morris have created a truly collaborative project, that is open to change every time it is performed. Music that draws from the old as well as the new, and that allows the listener to experience time and history from a refreshing, non-chronological point of view.

About

Duda and Kliphuis met for the first time at the Sound Out residency in Sokołowsko, Poland, where they bonded over their love of free improvisation, obscure electronics and their shared background in classical music. They decided to do a project together, meeting up for a series of residencies in Katowice (PL), Berlin (DE) and The Hague (NL). After recording many hours of improvisations together, they’ve developed a moving and intimate musical language, laid out in a set of new compositions for two improvisers and Baroque ensemble.

The premiere of Wake The Dead was performed in October 2022, together with 7 students of Early Music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam and at the Dag in de Branding Festival for new music in The Hague.
Joanna and Morris are a steady duo, but can be joined by different Baroque ensembles. They are also working on a smaller version, with 3-5 people on stage. The compositions give a lot of flexibility which they want to explore.
